“[Yes! The Devil!] You’re looking at me as though I’m weird. My god! Are you so out of touch with most of America, most of which believes in the devil? I mean, Jesus Christ believed in the devil! It’s in the Gospels! You travel in circles that are so, so removed from mainstream America that you are appalled that anybody would believe in the devil! Most of mankind has believed in the devil, for all of history. Many more intelligent people than you or me have believed in the devil.” – Antonin Scalia, (a Justice of the US Supreme Court… FROM THE BENCH.)

Corporations_ate_my_Baby?! What? Huh? (a Facebook posting)
I started being "Corp" in 2004 on mySpace. We were the first really active daily politics bloggers and post-monkeys on MySpace when it first started. It was a trip! Thousands of like minded people all finding one another and posting about everything from climate change to 9/11 theories. Those were the days. We all met each other then too. We organized and marched against Bush policies. People also hooked up like crazy. There are a lot of mySpace babies going into 4th and 5th grade this year.
I went onto other sites like Tumblr, WordPress and YouTube to try my activism there. Ultimately I got swept into Facebook where I had a private profile with over 2000 daily readers. Then they had their pre-IPO massacre and my profile was nuked.
Today I have 733 "Likes" on a "fan page" or whatever this is... which "reaches" 1,700 people a day and I try my best to post stuff that shows the progress we make and the stupidity on the other side. But it's not the same as the old days. We all know that. FB controls and limits us in comparison to "MySpace Tom" - and while the various "politics groups" are fun, they are nowhere near as intense as the old blogs were.
In many ways, socially the western world is better than it ever was before. We are less brutal, more scientific... and better at meeting basic needs. In other ways things are worse than the Gilded age. Those who don't have, suffer horribly. Their children cannot break out of poverty... and if they are not pink-skinned, their lives are worth less and they often die horribly. Humans of all hues are not doing what is required to stop the super-heating of our globe. Things are going to be terrible for a lot of humans in the future. I feel terrible for letting my great-grandchildren/nieces/nephews/cousins down.
Things are going to get worse-- and one day they will get bad enough to where we organize and chop the heads off of the "ruling class" (oligarchs.) I wish we could just be civilized about it... but... money. Corporations_ate_our_Civil_Options.
All gods ever claimed to exist were claimed to exist by humans.
Of the thousand or more god-concepts that are claimed today, right this very second, most contradict or nullify the others. All the claims we have ever seen admit that their god is not detectable from the human perspective. Each god requires you believe on faith, meaning without material evidence. Normally humans don't do that. Normally we check our bank balance to know how much we have. We don't bank on faith. Presumably, banking is not nearly as important as how you relate to the entire universe... so you would really want some solid evidence before picking one of the 1000 current (or the thousands of previous) gods to believe in without evidence.
What to do?
Your best bet is to reject claims of Allah, Shiva, Jehovah and L.Ron's Ghost until such time as there is a shred of evidence for one of them. You can't, as the church lady will admonish you to, rely on faith. Which one do you have faith in? The one that's popular geographically? That's for Kardashians, not for omnipotent creators of space and time. Nope.
You just have to take the default position. That makes sense, right? If one of these claims is true, or there is a god who has not yet been defined, you would think and hope that they would appreciate your intelligence and patience in the matter of that discovery. If that space monster blames you, he/she/it is an asswipe.
In the meantime, ain't nature grand?!
Some genius on a friend’s thread about the pledge of allegiance , went on a rant about how America was “founded on Judeo-Christian principles, that the “Separation of Church and State has been turned on it’s head…” and of course that our founders wanted America to be Christian.
After asking for a definition of “Judeo-Christian Values” I added this comment to the thread:
“When my grandmother was worshiping and praying to her savior, Jesus Christ, if you called her a “Christian” she would slap you in the face. The thing that has been turned on it’s head in the past few decades is the sweeping under the rug of the PROFOUND differences between sects of protestantism, not to mention the irreconcilable schisms between protestant and catholic or catholic and Greek orthodox worship of the New Testament. — “We’re all Christians” is a statement of absolute ignorance of the stark differences in belief of the worlds great religions and the separate versions of the one that uses the new testament. One of the reasons the SEPARATION of CHURCH and state was implemented has never “turned”… it is to keep your sect safe from the others.
Every sect … or nearly every one… makes it clear that all the others are wrong. If there is an afterlife (no evidence of that exists) and you have to be a protestant to have a good one, you still have only 1 in 23 THOUSAND chances of picking the right one. If you factor in all of the religions that have more than a million adherents who also believe in an afterlife that is dependent on believing the “right” thing, you have a 1 in 200,000 chance of picking the right one.
The separation of Church and State lets you live your life in the “wrong one” without letting any other sect persecute you. By not allowing the government to choose Catholic, you are safe as a protestant… by not allowing the Government to test candidates to make sure that they are Episcopalian, you as a Baptist may be elected.
I cannot think of a better value than, “let me believe what I want… and let there be no test of those beliefs If I seek public service.” Jews and “Christians” do not value that. They traditionally value adherence to one value whilst slaughtering tribes that believe differently. It is one of the 10 commandments not to allow those who choose the wrong belief to live with your tolerance. That is a shitty value.
Our deist founders held NO such values.” Our deist founders, many of them, preferred what today would be called, atheism, or the rejection of supernatural claims, as anything other than hypothetical.
I want to keep repeating something about fundamentalism, especially of the Abrahamic variety, Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and Orthodox or Conservative Judaism. I want to make the point in as many ways that I can that religion is about control of a community. Abrahamic religions are often about Punishment of some members for the authoritarian needs of the rest of the community. Probably in far forgotten times before humans could read and write, these strategies were helpful for the survival of the group. Step over the line, lose your foot. Let that be a lesson to you and all who witnessed.
We don't need that authoritarian addiction anymore. When a fundamentalist wants to behead a woman for being wanton, it has less to do with god and more to do with lust. In this case it is a lust for power and control that drives the religious leaders. When a religious television personality wants to make a point about a natural disaster, they always pick a "sin" that bothers them and then pretend that the bad weather was a creator sending a specific message about that sin. More lust for punishment... in this case a full blown fantasy of natures power being aimed at someone as punishment.
From now on when you see The Westboro Baptists or any other TV or YouTube preachers screaming about hell and punishment I want you to say to yourself, "I'm being shown their fetish. I'm hearing their porn fantasies. They are way into punishment. I don't have to listen to this. It is within my right to tell them to go do that in private. It is within my right to shame them publicly for sharing inappropriate appetites."
I post a lot of facts that should make right-wingers see the light… but they don’t.
“Conservatives” love power. The facts don’t matter.
If you make the non-rich a struggling working class with very little access to services, you have a ruling class that get to be treated as gods. So far every society ends up going that way before it falls. Every second we don't vote to tax them more; tax their upper brackets at 90% - and even tax wealth above a billion dollars at 100%, we are in danger of ending the America of our Constitution.
A world dominated by violent totalitarians (like China or some alliance between former communist nations -- or hell... the Saudi Kingdom) could/would be a dark age that we may never come back from... (unless they stop burning fossil fuels and just hook us all up to pedals.) Without democracy, honest exploration of human potential and scientific discovery (beyond weaponry) ceases. It's nice that we know why a minimum wage hike would be beneficial, or how climate change works against Wall Street banks and insurance, but before we try to convince rightwing zealots, first we have to disconnect the levers that they manipulate the system with. Money must be removed from policy. Until then, we can be "right" all day long but they will use their "might" ... and end the republic.
The US is going to bomb Syria for the first time in our history.
The “Long Oil War” has not ended since Bush. In 2000 we were at war with no one. We have been at war now since 2001….13 years. If Palin/McCain had been elected we would have bombed and attacked Libya, North Korea, Iran, Pakistan.. and expanded in Afghanistan and Iraq. Voting mattered because it’s not as bad as it could have been… but I can’t help thinking that if we went from 25% voter participation to 80% participation, we would be at peace.
Women have never been safe from religion
…but we will keep trying
Hey, I know this sounds crazy but people’s “deeply held beliefs” are almost always a danger to the women we love.
The reason we all need to be concerned about religion (if we are concerned about our shared society) is because our goals are to have good and beneficial POLICIES. Politics can lead to enough consensus that we get that POLICY. Policy leads to societal good. The goal is what’s good for as many of us as possible.
Religion scrambles the brain and logic with emotions so profoundly that people then have trouble with logic and rational thinking. That’s when they support policies that lead to BAD societal outcomes. But it gets worse: religious leaders and “experts” can then tell these believers that the policies that harmed them were under-applied… It didn’t work “because we really NEED MORE witch-burning to have happy women…”
They can claim that we need to burn ten or a hundred times more women to have happy women. And the human brain, when under-informed due to a blindness brought on by religious belief, cannot see the wrong in burning women. Good women are then actually tied up and burned until town after town begins running out of women to burn. After this puritan holocaust, when people finally come to their senses and decide, oops, maybe they misunderstood scripture, no one apologizes or gets in trouble – there is no accountability in faith. In fact, the crazy men who told everyone to burn witches are soon the ones who decide “what god really meant”… and now it’s onto burning kittens and puppies (the female ones, of course).
All over the nation, “deeply held religious beliefs” are causing men to insert themselves between women and their doctors.. and it’s all about punishment. It’s all about today’s new fantasy regarding what is “moral” and that women need to be punished by being jailed “if they endanger the baby by taking drugs (… smoking.. eating sushi… choosing the wrong god..)” – The morality-police next want to separate babies from these evil, immoral mothers s they can discard them; throw them in jail… and feel so faithful to their beliefs.
And so countless women in Tennessee, fearing punishment, will not go to the doctor anymore…especially if they have any trouble with substances. Now that fetus and later that baby gets even less help. To the believers, there will be even more ‘wicked women… ‘ and it will get worse and worse. This is already happening.
This is where we come in. We can see that religion is metaphor and we can see that law and society is a “here-and-now-reality.” And as much as the preachers scream, we are tasked. We must beat them back and say, “Separate our state from your church-beliefs”… and if we fight back hard enough, we stop ANY MORE women from being burned. In the meanwhile, they who lit the matches and gathered the kindling, go back to plotting their next rise to power.
The day is at hand. Be ever vigilant. No more women need be burned at the stake of superstition.
