Guns are tools; tools to make a higher body count

Guns Are Tools… To Make The Body Count Higher.

Excerpt from a blog at “The Progressive Cynic”

“Guns don’t kill people; people kill people” or “ Limiting guns will only lead to violent people simply using other methods of killing large numbers of people”

While it is true that guns are simply tools and have no ability to harm anybody on their own, the assertion that they have no part in the perpetration of violence is absurd.

If properly motivated, somebody can kill their enemy with a pair of nail-clippers, but this is irrelevant to the greater regulatory scheme. Just because there are other ways for people to kill one another, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t in the public interest to restrict the most common way people currently kill each other.

Guns give people a quick, easy, cheap, and relatively detached (compared to stabbings/beatings) method of killing people—even large numbers of people. By making killing easy, guns directly contribute to the thought process that must go into a killing and facilitate even higher body counts. Without guns, people would still kill others, but it would be far more difficult to accrue high body counts.

There is a good reason why guns have become the mass murderer’s weapon of choice; they are simply the most efficient way of getting the job done. Weapons other than guns can be used to kill large numbers of people, but none are as easy to obtain or use as guns:

  • Bombs may be lethal to large numbers of people, but they take expertise to build and are very risky for an amateur to handle (just look at the number of people who manage to mangle themselves playing with fireworks).
  • Knives are lethal in the right hands, but they can only kill one person at a time and have no ability to kill at a distance.
  • Cars can been used to kill people but they are far too large and unwieldy to replace guns (you can’t exactly put one in your backpack to sneak into a school).

A tool may simply be a shortcut to a desired result, but it isn’t fair to say that the tool has no part in achieving a result. A man with a hammer and a man with a gun could kill an identical number of people, but the gun certainly makes it more likely that the person will succeed, faster in their killing spree, and more likely to kill their specific targets.

Guns don’t kill people; people kill people. However, people with guns can easily and quickly kill a lot of people, while those who don’t have guns, cannot. In a country flooded with guns, the mass murderer (or simply the person who wishes to kill one person) is able to obtain their weapon easily and without much risk. Gun control laws may not be perfect, but they are a start on a long road towards a safer America
(This is part of a longer blog…. but I felt this part deserved special attention)

Religion as Porn Fantasy

I want to keep repeating something about fundamentalism, especially of the Abrahamic variety, Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and Orthodox or Conservative Judaism. I want to make the point in as many ways that I can that religion is about control of a community. Abrahamic religions are often about Punishment of some members for the authoritarian needs of the rest of the community. Probably in far forgotten times before humans could read and write, these strategies were helpful for the survival of the group. Step over the line, lose your foot. Let that be a lesson to you and all who witnessed.

If they want to get into punishment, let them do it out of the public square

We don't need that authoritarian addiction anymore. When a fundamentalist wants to behead a woman for being wanton, it has less to do with god and more to do with lust. In this case it is a lust for power and control that drives the religious leaders. When a religious television personality wants to make a point about a natural disaster, they always pick a "sin" that bothers them and then pretend that the bad weather was a creator sending a specific message about that sin. More lust for punishment... in this case a full blown fantasy of natures power being aimed at someone as punishment.
-

From now on when you see The Westboro Baptists or any other TV or YouTube preachers screaming about hell and punishment I want you to say to yourself, "I'm being shown their fetish. I'm hearing their porn fantasies. They are way into punishment.  I don't have to listen to this. It is within my right to tell them to go do that in private. It is within my right to shame them publicly for sharing inappropriate appetites."

Disconnect the levers!

I post a lot of facts that should make right-wingers see the light… but they don’t.

“Conservatives” love power.  The facts don’t matter.

If you make the non-rich a struggling working class with very little access to services, you have a ruling class that get to be treated as gods. So far every society ends up going that way before it falls.  Every second we don't vote to tax them more; tax their upper brackets at 90% - and even tax wealth above a billion dollars at 100%, we are in danger of ending the America of our Constitution.

“That lever does damage!”

A world dominated by violent totalitarians (like China or some alliance between former communist nations -- or hell... the Saudi Kingdom) could/would be a dark age that we may never come back from... (unless they stop burning fossil fuels and just hook us all up to pedals.) Without democracy, honest exploration of human potential and scientific discovery (beyond weaponry) ceases.  It's nice that we know why a minimum wage hike would be beneficial, or how climate change works against Wall Street banks and insurance, but before we try to convince rightwing zealots, first we have to disconnect the levers that they manipulate the system with.  Money must be removed from policy.  Until then, we can be "right" all day long but they will use their "might" ... and end the republic.

Why Good Americans Keep Religion Out Of Democracy

Women have never been safe from religion

…but we will keep trying

By Corporations_ate_my_BABY

Hey, I know this sounds crazy but people’s “deeply held beliefs” are almost always a danger to the women we love.

The reason we all need to be concerned about religion (if we are concerned about our shared society) is because our goals are to have good and beneficial POLICIES.  Politics can lead to enough consensus that we get that POLICY.  Policy leads to societal good.  The goal is what’s good for as many of us as possible.

Religion scrambles the brain and logic with emotions so profoundly that people then have trouble with logic and rational thinking. That’s when they support policies that lead to BAD societal outcomes.  But it gets worse: religious leaders and “experts” can then tell these believers that the policies that harmed them were under-applied… It didn’t work “because we really NEED MORE witch-burning to have happy women…”

They can claim that we need to burn ten or a hundred times more women to have happy women.  And the human brain, when under-informed due to a blindness brought on by religious belief, cannot see the wrong in burning women. Good women are then actually tied up and burned until town after town begins running out of women to burn.  After this puritan holocaust, when people finally come to their senses and decide, oops,  maybe they misunderstood scripture, no one apologizes or gets in trouble – there is no accountability in faith.  In fact, the crazy men who told everyone to burn witches are soon the ones who decide “what god really meant”… and now it’s onto burning kittens and puppies (the female ones, of course).

All over the nation, “deeply held religious beliefs” are causing men to insert themselves between women and their doctors.. and it’s all about punishment. It’s all about today’s new fantasy regarding what is “moral” and that women need to be punished by being jailed “if they endanger the baby by taking drugs (… smoking.. eating sushi… choosing the wrong god..)” – The morality-police next want to separate babies from these evil, immoral mothers s they can discard them; throw them in jail… and feel so faithful to their beliefs.

And so countless women in Tennessee, fearing punishment, will not go to the doctor anymore…especially if they have any trouble with substances. Now that fetus and later that baby gets even less help.  To the believers, there will be even more ‘wicked women… ‘ and it will get worse and worse. This is already happening.

This is where we come in. We can see that religion is metaphor and we can see that law and society is a “here-and-now-reality.”   And as much as the preachers scream, we are tasked.  We must beat them back and say, “Separate our state from your church-beliefs”… and if we fight back hard enough, we stop ANY MORE women from being burned.  In the meanwhile, they who lit the matches and gathered the kindling, go back to plotting their next rise to power.
The day is at hand. Be ever vigilant.  No more women need be burned at the stake of superstition.

Want a revolution over the 1%? The future is open-source

The open source revolution is coming and it will conquer the 1% says ex CIA spy

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/earth-insight/2014/jun/19/open-source-revolution-conquer-one-percent-cia-spy

Today's capitalism, he argues, is inherently predatory and destructive:

“Over the course of the last centuries, the commons was fenced, and everything from agriculture to water was commoditised without regard to the true cost in non-renewable resources. Human beings, who had spent centuries evolving away from slavery, were re-commoditised by the Industrial Era.”

Open source everything, in this context, offers us the chance to build on what we’ve learned through industrialisation, to learn from our mistakes, and catalyse the re-opening of the commons, in the process breaking the grip of defunct power structures and enabling the possibility of prosperity for all.

“Sharing, not secrecy, is the means by which we realise such a lofty destiny as well as create infinite wealth. The wealth of networks, the wealth of knowledge, revolutionary wealth – all can create a nonzero win-win Earth that works for one hundred percent of humanity. This is the ‘utopia’ that Buckminster Fuller foresaw, now within our reach.”

The goal, he concludes, is to reject:

“… concentrated illicitly aggregated and largely phantom wealth in favor of community wealth defined by community knowledge, community sharing of information, and community definition of truth derived in transparency and authenticity, the latter being the ultimate arbiter of shared wealth.”

“Absolutely Nothing” by Jim Wright

You must read this.

You must.

http://www.stonekettle.com/2014/06/absolutely-nothing.html

Excerpt:

Tragically, all we’ve fought for in Iraq, all that 4,500 American lives were shed to gain, is on the cusp, potentially, of vanishing.
Mitt Romney, “Ideas Summit,” 6/13/2014

All we fought for in Iraq.

All we fought for in Iraq is on the cusp of vanishing.

That’s what Mitt Romney says.

We fought for. We fought for. We.

Oh, so it’s we now, is it, Mitt?

We.

I must have missed you over there, but it was a busy place. We. The guy who helped set up “pro-draft” rallies and yet somehow managed to avoid service in Vietnam is upset about losing what “we” fought for? We.

Yeah, fuck you, Mitt.

And you’re all welcome to quote me on that.

Somebody stepped into my office yesterday and asked how I felt about it.  He wanted to know how I felt about “losing” Iraq.

How do I feel about losing all we fought for?

I don’t know.

First, I’m going to need somebody to explain to me exactly what it was that we were fighting for.

What was it? What is it that we gained, according to Mitt Romney? And what is on the cusp of vanishing? What is that? No, really, somebody please explain it to me.

Because I’d love to know.

The Wikipedia says Operation Iraqi Freedom started on the 20th of March, 2003, which is just another reason why you shouldn’t believe anything you read in the Wikipedia (don’t, just don’t).  That’s not correct, the war began a day earlier.  See, I was there on the night the war really started, at precisely 2200 hours, on the 19th of March in the Northern Arabian Gulf.  I was there when US Navy SEALs and Polish GROM stormed the MABOT and KAAOT oil terminals a full day before Saddam Hussein discovered that his time was finally up.  In point of fact, I had arrived there four months before, a few days before Christmas in December of 2002. From the day of my arrival (and before that really) to the day the war started, and for months after, I was a Navy intelligence officer working in support of the invasion force.  There’s not much I don’t know about the events leading up to war and the aftermath of the invasion.

Well, not much except for that one little detail.

Why.

All these years later, and I still don’t know why.

Oh, I mean, I know what they told us, sure, Saddam Hussein attacked America on 9-11.  Right? That’s what they said, that’s what the Commander in Chief told us. Saddam Hussein was in league with Al Qaida, remember? The son of a bitch and his stinking nation of terrorists attacked us. The Iraqis had it coming. And Georgie Boy was going to finish what his daddy started. Hooray! Right? That’s what they said.

Except those of us in the professional intelligence community looked at each other and thought, wait, what? How the hell did we miss that? Saddam and Osama bin Laden are working together? Buwah? But Rumsfeld, he had his own little extra-constitutional intelligence outfit staffed with his simpering cronies who he paid to blow smoke up his pinched grey ass until his colon resembled beef jerky and he sure didn’t have much use for us – after all, we were just the military he had.

Ours, as they say, is not to reason why, ours is to but do and die, right? At least that’s what Rummy told us and you know, you go into war with the Secretary of Defense you have, not the one you’d like to have. And if Rumsfeld says he’s got the real scoop, it must be true? Right? Sure, that justifies his contempt for us, sure it does.

Except, Rumsfeld’s little masturbation fantasy turned out not to be the case.

But hey, never mind that, Saddam Hussein was threatening us anyway, wasn’t he? Sure he was, in fact, that’s the first time you heard the phrase “Weapons of Mass Destruction” isn’t it? The bastard had nukes and germs and war gas and he was just itching to use them on America, wasn’t he?  Heck we even had pictures of “mobile weapons labs” to prove it, isn’t that what Colin Powell told the UN and the world? And by damn Saddam had been buying Yellow Cake uranium from Niger, right? Colin Powell wouldn’t lie to us, would he? He was a hero, a general, he wouldn’t send his comrades into war on a lie now would he?

Except all that turned out to be bullshit too, and Colin Powell was either a dupe of staggering proportions or he was the kind of Soldier who would fuck his buddy right in the ass without so much as a reach-around and I’ll leave it up to you to figure which one is worse.

But by the time we figured out we’d been ass-raped by Colin Powell, we were shoulder deep in Iraq, Baghdad was burning, Iraq’s army had thrown down their weapons and taken off their uniforms and had melted into the population, Saddam had vanished and his sons were dead, and the President of the United States had already declared victory from the deck of an American aircraft carrier.

And so, the objective became … what?

Hearts and minds and freedom and democracy and nation building and magic bunnies who fart sunshine and rainbows.

Unfortunately, it turns out we’re real good at the blowing shit up part, not so good at the magic bunnies part.

(much more here)
